S&T EXPO 2014 Creativity & Innovation toward the Great FEATI Experience

This was the forward-thinking “there-is-no-box” theme in this year’s Science & Technology Expo held from February 27-28, 2014 at the University’s Activity Center. This once-a-year event provides the convergent venue for students, faculty members, alumni, and exhibitors to present and demonstrate techno-centric research projects before a select panel of judges. Dr. Benilda S. Ebarvia, Senior Science Research Specialist of the Industrial Technology Development Institute/Department of Science and Technology and FEATI alumna was opening day’s Keynote Speaker.

Seven high school students from Esteban Abada, Cayetano Arellano, and Ramon Magsaysay participated in the On-the-Spot Art Contest resulting in Esteban Abada’s Mark David R. Masangkay in 1st place, Cayetano Arellano’s Sheena Mylac P. Alega in 2nd place, and Ramon Magsaysay’s Joshua Frederich T. Mortel in 3rd place. Moving on to the “Quik Minds Orienteering Challenge,” a FEATI-driven intellectual challenge that’s become one of the most anticipated events in the S&T Expo, four high schools fielded their teams with emerging winners Manila Science High School in 1st place, followed by Taguig Science High School and Ramon Magsaysay High School, 2nd and 3rd placers respectively. The fourth team was from Esteban Abada High School.

In the research category, there was an impressive 18 entries from high schools Cayetano Arellano (4); Esteban Abada (4); Jose P. Laurel (2); Rizal (1); Ramon Magsaysay (3); Victorino Mapa (2); 7 entries for the FEATIU college-level conceptual category from Aero/AMT Department, COE (1); Communications Department, CASE (2); Geodetic Engineering Department, COE (1); Information Technology Department, COE (1); Mechanical Engineering Department, COE (2); 12 entries for the FEATIU college-level documented category from Civil Engineering Department, COE (2); EE-ECE Departments, COE (2); Geodetic Engineering Department, COE (5); Information Technology Department, COE (2) and from “left field”, Tourism Management Department, COB (1).

s The judging panel composed of Dr. Dorisday E. Revilleza (FEATI University), Dr. Hernando S. Salapare III (University of the Philippines-Diliman), Mr. Jaymar B. Soriano (University of the Philippines-Diliman) declared the following winners… High School Research 1st Place: Taguig Science High School – “Isolation of Cellulose-degrading Thermophilic Compost Bacteria and Screening of their Cellulotic Property”; 2nd Place: Taguig Science High School – “Assessment and Evaluation of UV Protective Property of Naturally Dyed Cotton Fabrics”; and 3rd Place: Victorino Mapa High School – “Deposited Chitin Nanowires and N/Mn-doped Carbon Nanostructures as Thin Film Solar Cell”… College Research – Conceptual 1st Place: Mechanical Engineering Department, COE – “A Prototype Urban Car than can Go the Farthest Distance Given a Maximum of One Liter of Gasoline”; 2nd Place: Geodetic Engineering Department, COE – “Obstructed Waterways Analysis for Northern Manila through Aerial Photogrammetry”; 3rd Place: Aero/AMT Department, COE – “Drag Polar Determination in the Conceptual Phase of Aircraft Design”…. College Research – Documented 1st Place and winner of The Zara Cup, a prestigious award traditionally given to the best college research project: FEATIU EE-ECE Departments, COE – “Mobile Robot for Search and Rescue Using Global System for Mobile Communications Technology” making the Department the winner for three straight years; 2nd Place: Geodetic Engineering Department, COE – “Identifying Fire Station and Hydrant in the U-Belt to Optimize Emergency Response thru GIS”. After their win, said research was presented in the U-Belt Consortium Student Research Forum on March 6th at the Lyceum of the Philippines University; 3rd Place: EE-ECE Departments, COE – “iSense2: A Modification of iSense – An Obstruction Detection for the Blind”. Dexter S. Soriano of the Information Technology Department won the Handbook Cover Design Contest.

The main events were complemented by seminars delivered by Engr. Renato T. Bañaga of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI-DOST) and Prof. Cora S. Salumbides, a DOST Balik Scientist and a Resident Scientist of the Philippine Science Centrum; Guests and participants were also able to enjoy fare offered by Chow King, Greenwich, and Fall-in-Line Restaurant.

FEATIU’s S&T Expo souvenir program was made possible through generous sponsors Mach Union Water Laboratory, Inc. (MUWLI), UP Engineering Research and Development for Technology (UP-ERDT), F. R. Sevilla Industrial and Development Corporation, GIBMA Engineering Services, FACE Builders and Development Corporation (FBDC), RVN Construction and Trading International, Inc., Engr. Ireneo G. Bughao, and Glenn S. Paronda. Booths were supplied by MSD Godspeed Exhibits Corporation for housing the exhibits of the guest high schools mentioned earlier, as well as those of the government and private exhibitors namely DOST-National Capital Region (DOST-NCR); Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI); Philippine Science Centrum (PSC) of the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology (PFST); Naval Research and Development Center (NRDC) of the Philippine Navy; Philippine Aerospace Development Corporation (PADC); and Mach Union Water Laboratory, Inc. (MUWLI).
