FEATI University plants hundreds of trees at the La Mesa Watershed

Sweat and more than 2.2 kilometers of walking to the tree planting site did not stop FEATI students, faculty and staff led by its President Dr.-Ing. Adolfo Jesus R. Gopez from flexing their potential green thumbs as they planted around two hundred trees at the La Mesa Watershed Nature Reserve in Quezon City on July 9, 2010.

The University adopted trees at the La Mesa Watershed and Nature Reserve as a show of support for the “Bantay Kalikasan Save La Mesa Watershed Project” of ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. The tree adoption was made possible by the proceeds of “Blue + Gold = Green: A Fashion Show for a Greener Environment,” co-presented by the FEATI School of Fine Arts and the Events & Promotions Group held January 26 at the FEATI Bridgepoint.

All of the participants hiked their way to the site carrying with them their trowels and their determination to contribute to the ever-growing lush greens of the nature reserve, which remains the biggest in the metropolis at 2,700 hectares. The La Mesa Watershed and Nature Reserve is an important protected area due to its numerous substantial beneficial roles, one of which is its function as the primary source of drinking water for about 12 million Metro Manila residents.

Leading by example, University President Dr.-Ing. Gopez did not hesitate to break sweat and get down and dirty. “What better way is there to help the environment than planting trees in a watershed? We capture more water, reduce greenhouse gases and purify the air. In a single stroke, we conserve natural resources, fight against climate change, and improve our environment.”

After the tree planting, the FEATI University delegation drove to the La Mesa Ecopark where they were treated with a guided tour of the park facilities and indulged in leisurely activities such as boating at the lagoon and picnicking at the park grounds.

Apart from the President, University faculty members and administrators in attendance included Events & Promotions Head Ms. Melanie P. Florentino, Geodetic Engineering Department Chair Dr. Maria Cecilia Paringit, Customs Administration Department Chair Mr. Anecito Omondang and 3rd Engr. Jason Ellamil of the College of Maritime Education. (KAL)
